The documentary will ‘set the record straight’ on the Elisa Lam case
The latest true crime series release on Netflix is Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. The chilling four-part series will explore the death, and theories surrounding the case, of Elisa Lam, a 21-year-old student who was found dead there in 2013.
The case went viral – most notably bizarre footage showing the last moments she was seen alive, of the student jumping in and out of an elevator, making erratic hand gestures and looking out as if she was being followed or talking to someone outside.
Here is everything you need to know about Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel ahead of its Netflix release.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel is about the mysterious death of Elisa Lam
From director Joe Berlinger (Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes), Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel is a new Netflix documentary true crime series that looks into the mysterious death of Elisa Lam. For nearly a century the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles has been linked to some of the city’s most notorious activity, from untimely deaths to housing serial killers.
In 2013, college student Elisa Lam was staying at the Cecil when she vanished, igniting a media frenzy and mobilising a global community of internet sleuths eager to solve the case. Lam’s disappearance became the latest chapter in the hotel’s complex and chilling history.
After being seen in the creepy CCTV footage in the lift, Elisa Lam’s body was discovered in a water tank on the roof. Her body was only discovered after hotel guests complained of the water tasting and smelling funny, and some of it running black when they turned the taps on. Elisa was found naked in the tank, with her clothes in there too. Speculation began as to how she ended up there, and how she managed to lift the huge lid of the tank back closed after supposedly climbing in.
Joe Berlinger has said that the documentary series will “set the record straight” about the case. He told Radio Times: “It was an opportunity to play with the genre and set the record straight on a very famous story that has been told, I think, irresponsibly. Because I think it’s very disrespectful to the victim of the tragedy to dismiss it as a ghost story.
“I want people to realise that you need a lot more than circumstantial evidence to prove a case. There’s just a lot of strange coincidences but none of that is a replacement for cold hard facts.”
