If you’ve been on the fence about opening the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, there’s now another reason to consider applying.
Chase has just given the card’s sign-up bonus a boost with a new statement credit of up to $50 toward grocery store purchases in the first year of having the card. That’s in addition to earning 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
This new bonus is yet another example of pandemic-friendly benefits from credit card issuers we’ve seen in recent months, and the addition of a grocery credit to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a welcome opportunity to maximize the card’s perks when many of us are still staying close to home.

We’re focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card. These cards won’t be worth it if you’re paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.
Chase Sapphire Preferred 60K bonus plus $50 grocery credit
Only new Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card members are eligible to earn up to $50 in grocery store statement credits in the first year of opening the card — existing cardholders don’t qualify.
Getting $50 back for purchases you’ll almost certainly make anyway can offset more than half of the card’s $95 annual fee. You’ll automatically receive the credit when you make grocery purchases with your card during the first 12 months, with no activation required.
Keep in mind Chase includes supermarkets and smaller grocery stores in what qualifies for the statement credit, but purchases at warehouse clubs, drug stores, and discount stores that sell lots of items other than groceries aren’t eligible. The terms also say that grocery delivery services will only qualify if the merchant category is coded as a grocery store.
Through April 30, 2021, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card holders can earn 2x points at grocery stores (including eligible pick-up and delivery services) on up to $1,000 in spending per month (then 1x). Normally, the card earns just 1 point per dollar on these purchases.
Chase has also added other benefits to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to boost value for customers during the COVID pandemic, including the ability to redeem Ultimate Rewards points toward grocery store, home improvement store, dining, and eligible charity purchases with a 25{d54a1665abf9e9c0a672e4d38f9dfbddcef0b06673b320158dd31c640423e2e5} bonus though Pay Yourself Back. Cardholders can also activate a year of complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership, and receive statement credits toward Peloton fitness classes, both through December 31.
